Chester Barnard's Concept of AuthorityThe meaning of authority has been frequently discussed in various contexts by philosophers, political scientists, and administrators. A unique position is held by Chester Barnard, former President of the Rockefeller Foundation, former President of the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company, and noted theorist in scientific administration. In his book, The Functions of the Executive, Barnard discusses the question of authority as he experienced it in his many years as an executive. In this article the author attempts to clarify Barnard's theory and show its present-day significance. Dr. Edward Smith is an Assistant Professor at Boston College and the Director of the M.A.T./ M.S. T. Program (Master of Arts/Science in Teaching Program) in the School of Education.
